Dairy Farmers Threaten to Increase Milk Price by Rs. 50 Per Liter

Karachi’s dairy farmers have issued a strong warning: if their demands are not met, the price of milk could soon rise by Rs. 50 per litre, pushing retail rates from Rs. 220 to Rs. 270.

Speaking at the Karachi Press Club, leaders of the Dairy Farmers Association said the sector is on the brink of collapse after the devastating floods. They revealed that the cost of inputs — including fodder, fuel, and maintenance — has jumped by nearly 30%, leaving farmers with no option but to demand higher prices.

Daily Losses in Billions

The association claims that dairy farmers are facing Rs. 3 billion in daily losses from milk supply operations. Karachi alone has over 1 million cattle and buffalo, producing around 5 million litres of milk every day.

If the government fails to act, farmers warn that thousands of animals could face starvation, leading to a major crisis in the city’s milk supply.

Deadline for Government Action

The farmers have given the Sindh government a deadline of October 1, 2025 to approve the new prices. Otherwise, they will hold a major protest outside the Chief Minister’s House.

What It Means for Consumers

If the hike goes through, the price of milk in Karachi will rise from Rs. 220 to Rs. 270 per litre — an increase that will directly impact household budgets, tea shops, bakeries, and sweet makers across the city.
